CODE OF CONDUCT

RESPECT FOR SELF, FOR OTHERS, FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND FOR LEARNING

Classrooms

  • treat teachers, substitutes, PSA’s, other students, office and custodial staff and volunteers with respect
  • dress, speak and act appropriately
  • be on time for class and prepared to give your best effort
  • follow classroom rules and routines
  • be kind and helpful to others
  • help in keeping your classroom neat and tidy

Hallways and

Stairwells

  • walking quietly and safely to the right at all times
  • be polite and respectful to others
  • keep your hands and feet to yourself
  • clear hall quickly at all times
  • help in keeping hallways and stairwells neat and tidy
  • dress or undress at the side of the hallway by your coat rack

Assemblies

  • sit quietly and respect the speaker(s) and/or performance
  • enter and exit the assembly in an orderly fashion
  • keep the center isle clear at all times

Eating Times

  • sit in your seat when eating and drinking your own food
  • stay in your classroom until the bell to go outside unless permission to go to the washroom or canteen is granted
  • listen to noon supervisors
  • bring healthy foods to eat
  • clean up after eating

Canteen

  • place orders on time
  • line up appropriately and be polite and respectful to others
  • take food either back to classroom or outside to eat
  • canteen trips should be done quickly

Indoor Recess

And/or Lunch

  • students are to remain in their classroom
  • help in keeping the classroom quiet, respectful and clean
  • permission is necessary if leaving the classroom
  • listen to noon supervisors

Playground

  • “hands off” and no rough play
  • play safe and take turns
  • play in your designated area
  • take care of equipment
  • follow playground rules
  • listen to staff and lunch supervisors
  • bikes are to be kept in the bike racks on the P-1 playground and students are to enter and exit on York St.

 

Outdoor Line-ups

  • go to your class line-up immediately when the bell rings
  • line-up in a straight line facing forward ready to enter the school

Gymnasium

  • eat and drink elsewhere
  • enter only with adult permission
  • enter and exit safely
  • follow gym rules

Library

  • enter and exit quietly and orderly at all times
  • use quiet voices
  • follow library rules
  • eat and drink elsewhere

Multipurpose Room (Art Room)

  • help in keeping neat and tidy
  • put materials away when finished

Bus

  • follow driver rules
  • when arriving go straight to your playground area, unless raining
  • when leaving, be on time and walk to your bus line-up
  • line up  on “the yellow line” facing forward
  • wait for a signal from teacher or driver to walk to your bus

Dismissal

  • all P-1 students leave at 2:35 with walkers meeting parents either in the lobby or outdoors
  • grade 2-6 walkers are dismissed at 2:35 (1st bell) and must exit through the lobby or by the 2-3 playground to meet parents
  • grade 2-6 bus students are dismissed at 2:38 (2nd bell) and go orderly to the bus line-ups

Washrooms

  • get permission to use the washrooms
  • use before you go out at recess and lunch
  • use quickly and quietly
  • remember to wash hands
  • help keep the washroom clean and tidy

Peace Room

  • please arrive on time at 12:35
  • eat your lunch before you come
  • the Peace Room is a quiet room
  • respect the teacher on duty
Internet
  • Using the Internet for quality learning purposes only

Environment

  • recycle, recycle, recycle
  • help keep the school neat and clean
  • place litter in the proper recyclable containers
  • take care of school equipment and property

BRIDGEWATER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is committed to making our school a safe and caring place for all students. We will treat each other with respect and we will not tolerate bullying in any form at BES.

1.         We define bullying as follows:

Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.

2.         Examples of bullying can include:

            •           hurting someone physically (e.q. hitting, kicking, tripping, pushing, etc.)

            •           stealing or damaging another person’s things

            •           ganging up on someone

            •           hurtful teasing

            •           using putdowns, including teasing someone because of their race or whether they’re a boy or girl

            •           unwanted showing or touching of private body parts

            •           spreading mean rumors about someone

            •           leaving someone out on purpose or trying to get other kids not to play with someone

3.         Staff at our school will do the following things to prevent bullying and help children feel safe at school:

            •           closely supervise students in all areas of the school and playground

            •           watch for signs of bullying and stop it when they see it

•           teach the Second Step and PEBS program to all students in P-6 and use other resources to supplement

            •           take seriously parents’ concerns about bullying and look into all reported incidents

            •           give consequences for bullying based on the BES discipline code

            •           provide immediate consequences for retaliation against students who report bullying

4.         Students at our school will do the following things to prevent bullying:

            •           treat each other with respect

            •           refuse to bully others

            •           refuse to let others be bullied

            •           refuse to watch, laugh or join in when someone is being bullied

            •           try to include everyone in play, especially those who are often left out

            •           report bullying to an adult right away when they or someone else is unsafe or if there is touching or showing of private body parts

            •           report to an adult any bullying that keeps happening

            •           report to an adult any time they are unsure what to do

Appropriate Consequences

When our students behave inappropriately, one or more of the following consequences will be applied as deemed appropriate.

1.         Reminder of the discipline code infraction, first warning, discussion of possible consequences, reprimand.

2.         Peer mediation with appropriate resolution and follow up.

3.         Quiet time spent in our Peace Room

4.         Cleaning, picking up, repairing, apologizing, or making restitution to undo the damage caused by the misbehavior

5.         Developing, writing, signing and carrying out a plan for improved behavior

6.         Phone calls or letters to parents or guardians who may be asked to attend a conference about the situation

7.         Loss of unscheduled time at recess, lunch hour or other appropriate time.

8.         Time-outs in an appropriate location on the playground, in the school and possibly the home of the student, to cool off and reflect on the unacceptable behavior

9.         Involvement in peer helper, anger management or behavior modification programs.

10.       Participation in counseling with teachers, administrator, school psychologist or other staff support person, or professionals from other agencies external to the school.

11.       Loss of extra-curricular activities.

12.       In-school suspension.

13.       An after school meeting with the student, parents, all staff who teach the student and administration in an attempt to avoid out of school suspension. (i.e. mini restorative justice)

14.       Out of school suspension (as governed by school board and provincial policies/regulations).

15.       Report to police (for violation of civil and/ or criminal laws such as those involving serious property damage, use of weapons or controlled substances.
